Welsh Gazette 3rd April 1930
Capt. E. A. L. Powell, D.L., J.P., of Nanteos, D.L., J.P., Nanteos.
The death occurred at noon on Thursday last of Capt. Edward Athelstan Lewis Powell, DL.L., J.P., of Nanteos, at the age of 59. During the past winter he had been laid up with illness for about six weeks but made a good recovery. On Monday in last week, he was taken ill again with pneumonia, and the attack ended fatally in four days.
Capt. Powell was the only son of Mr. William Beauclerc Powell and Mrs Powell, who died within days of each other at the end of 1911, and were buried together on the same day in the family vault at Llanbadarn churchyard. Capt. Powell was educated in Rugby School and at Oxford, and on leaving college returned home to manage the family estate. He joined the Leicestershire Militia, and when war broke out accepted a commission in the 2nd battalion of the Leicester Regiment, with which he served two years in Mesopotamia. He married Margaret, daughter of the late Sir Pryse Pryse. Bart., Gogerddan, who survives him, and whom deep sympathy is extended in her bereavement. Their only son, Lieut. William Edward Powell, of the Welsh Guards, was killed in action in France three days before the Armistice at the age of eighteen. Capt. Powell represented the Llanfarian division on the County Council for several years up to the time of the war. He was also a member of the Standing Joint Police Committee, and as a justice of the peace sat regularly on the Llanilar bench. He took a practical interest in agriculture and was a member of the committee of the United Counties Hunters’ Society and president of the Aberystwyth Horse Show. He was a kind and sympathetic landlord, and the relations between him and his tenants were always of the most friendly character.
